We assisted Annelo make the move from South Africa to Newcastle, Australia and we were delighted  when we received an email from her telling us about her experience. Annelo has very generously offered to share this story for any other any other people who might be considering making an international move.

Dave’s Story: Conquering the fear of the unknown!

Think Global Recruitment helped David make the move from Zimbabwe to Perth, Australia in 2007 where he still lives today managing his own accountancy business. We recently caught up with him to find out about his experience and any advice he would offer to others.

How did you feel before the move?

 “At that stage it was really just a fear of the unknown. I’d never lived away from home so I didn’t know how it would turn out. I had it in my head that I was just going to make the move overseas and see how it goes. I knew that it was going to be unchartered territory”.

How long did it take to settle in?

“It took six months to a year to really settle in. You find yourself calling home frequently at the start. You then get to experience the new culture, new people and meet new friends.”

With multicultural societies like Perth you have such a vast range of nationalities. There is such an acceptance of cultures that makes it very easy to fit in quickly”.

So with so many cities in Australia why from why did you choose to settle in Perth?

“I’ve been to visit other places like Sydney and Melbourne but I’ve found that those cities are too busy for me.  I really enjoy the lifestyle here and have built up a good client base for my business."

And what about the professional experience?
 

 “Having had previous Big Four experience it was building upon what I had learnt already. I was working with clients in oil and gas, the work was demanding but it did meet expectations. The professional ethics on the work side lived up to expectations”.

And the biggest benefit?
 

“Career progression- The sky is the limit depending on what someone wants to do. If someone wants to start their own business in the future, it would be really worth doing!

Even if somebody wanted to go into commerce, the companies here are bigger and you can get exposure to their main head offices”.

Advice to other accountants think of making the move?

 "If someone isn’t sure, give it six months and see how it goes. If it doesn’t work there’s no harm in trying, it’s definitely worth it. I would really encourage people to go out there and see how they get on”.

How did Think Global Recruitment assist you ?

 

“A mate of mine gave me your contact details and when I called up the lady she asked me which country I want to go to, I said, 'Australia, then Canada and maybe the US'. A few days later she comes back and says ‘I’ve got an opportunity for a Big Four firm in Australia, and then she talked me through the process. Craig’s Story - Making the move to Partner

Think Global Recruitment assisted Craig in making a move from Scotland to PKF in Sydney, which a few years ago merged with the BDO network. In just 7 years Craig worked his way up from Audit Senior to Partner and remains with the firm, 13 years on.   Last month he sat down with our Managing Director to tell us about his story.

 

 

 

 

I was really surprised at how international Sydney was when I arrived. Coming from Central Scotland, the diversity of the people was definitely eye opening but in a good way. There were people from South Africa, Hong Kong, Singapore, UK and Europe. The blend of cultures really broadened your personal outlook on life. 

Due to its sporty lifestyle Sydney has always been buzzing with activities and events to partake in. I managed to do a few triathlons in the last couple of years, something I don’t think I would have done in Scotland. There’s a big focus on keeping fit and healthy which is really good for your own personal motivation.

In the workplace, they definitely work harder than I first expected. It’s not somewhere where you go and work for a couple of hours and then sit on the grass watching cricket and drinking beer. However, compared to the UK it does feel more relaxed, having a greater focus on a more flexible working lifestyle. There’s a team mindset rather than a hierarchical one, allowing you to interact easily with Partners and Senior Management. Most importantly, you have a real sense that people listen to your ideas and what you have to say. These points are pretty important when considering your own career progression. Overall, there is definitely a culture that if you work hard and perform well that you will be rewarded and can progress quickly.

Having worked for PKF, which is now BDO, for a number of years I’ve managed to wear a couple of different hats. I’ve audited public multinationals, large international groups and privately owned entities. I’ve been involved with industries such as media and entertainment, high street retail, wholesale product distribution and funds management. Last year, I was appointed Partner in charge of People and Culture for BDO Sydney and Melbourne. I really enjoy working with people which is great because I manage a team of 85 at the minute, handling client portfolios worth up to £2million.

Altogether, moving here has been a great opportunity and I would recommend anyone to try it. There’s lots of opportunity to learn new things and it’s a good place to bring up kids. I’ve been here so long I’ve now got my own passport, but the locals still struggle with my accent!

Amy & Adam's Story: A couple's new life abroad

 

Hearing about couples making their dream move abroad to start an exciting new life together is always fantastic for us to hear about. We helped Amy and Adam, two accountants, move from Leeds to Darwin a year ago. Our Managing Director recently caught up with them to find out how they’ve been settling in.

Trying new things

Both have fully embraced their new home soaking up the sporty culture by joining the local ‘soccer’ (as they call it!) team.  Amy only starting to play after moving there having been instantly attracted to the chilled out Australian way of life spending time playing a few games of soccer and having a few beers. They’ve both taken full advantage of the great sporting scene by learning to play basketball too. 

What about social circles?

Arriving together to a new country as a couple means you’re not going to be alone, but it’s easier to get by with a little help from friends so how did Amy and Adam find it? “It was really easy due to the huge numbers of expats, you’re all in the same boat, settling in to a new culture”. As well as meeting people through work and making use of the wide range of activities and extracurriculars on offer, they have also been indulging in the world renowned social Ozzy BBQ.

On the path to success

"Australia’s transient society, allows more opportunities for career progression which is great and being given TOIL (time off in lieu) means you have time to explore the country. The firm is very generous especially when you hit your targets and that extra cash comes in handy for planning visits home". 

How does the future look?

Both are happily based in their company and in the next two years will be able to get permanent residency. Before too long they can become fully integrated into their new found home. 

Surely there must there must be some downsides...

“Accommodation might cost a bit more but people in general are less materialistic so you can adjust to make those changes”. They miss the traditional English pubs and log fires. Christmas being warm doesn’t go down too well either, but they can always take full use of the time off in lieu and bonuses to jet back home for a white Christmas. 

Amy and Adam seem to have found their feet in Darwin. It definitely sounds like they have made a great decision by moving.

Things to Consider When Making an International Move

As I’m sure everyone will be telling you, an international move is something everyone must do in their lifetime. This is echoed throughout the office here in Edinburgh and by many of the professionals who have been placed by us. What are you waiting for? The Think Global Recruitment team are experienced and dedicated to helping you secure a new job in an international location. The experience, and achievement, is like no other. Embrace the challenges facing you, celebrate the differences and most of all enjoy the opportunity!

Understandably, you may find an international move to be a slightly nerve-wracking experience. I certainly did but I am so glad I overcame my worries and had the time of my life. Here at Think Global Recruitment, we not only find you a job, but offer support and guidance to make the move as easy and worry-free for you as possible.

What do you find most daunting about making an international move? A question which will fill some with sky-scraping levels of anxiety, and a question which others will never really consider seriously because they’re nothing if not adaptable to any situation.

Is it leaving home, your family and friends and the security which familiarity brings? Is it the new culture, the new people, and not knowing anyone in the country, let alone the city? Or is it the more practical considerations – how much will your accommodation cost, how do you get a mobile phone SIM card, what sort of taxes are you expected to pay and how do you pay? Or perhaps it’s the little things that you’ll never know until you make the move and warning letters, for TV licenses and various other things, drop down through your letter box and you wonder why no one has ever told you. Or what if there is an emergency, what is the telephone number you call? What’s the dialling code for friends and family members who want to call you and catch up whilst you are living it large in new and foreign cultures?

Panic not!! Whilst I can’t provide you with all the answers, I do try to supply you with as much relevant information about living in a new country as I can. What makes me able to do this? By putting myself in your shoes, hypothetically, and calling upon my own experience of making an international move, to Australia, myself a couple of years ago, and travelling extensively to and from.

When choosing which course to study at university, it was a no brainer for me between business studies, and international business studies. Purely because it was compulsory for all international business students to study abroad for at least one semester. However, as the time drew closer to choosing which continent I wanted to spend at least 6 months of my life in, I quickly transitioned from being one of those people who gave the practicalities very little thought, itching to get away to see and experience the world, to a little apprehensive of the unknown, mostly.

As it turned out, I was one of the lucky ones who was awarded my first choice – Australia! Although not too culturally dissimilar to the one I was accustomed to, I was still moving to the other side of the world, never having been there before, not knowing anyone, and having to organise everything myself – flights, visa, application to university, accommodation, health and travel insurance, bank accounts, the list continues!  

Now having returned back to the UK, and graduated from university, I have joined the Think Global Recruitment team as a Marketing Intern. My first project here is to research various cities to make that international move a little bit less daunting for all those lucky professionals who are being placed by the team here at Think Global Recruitment. I aim to put those people making, or thinking of making, an international move’s minds more at ease by providing information on: how to set up a bank account, how much tax one is required to pay, the most common mobile phone networks, information about healthcare and dental treatments, the most common airlines which operate in that country to a few suggestions of tourist attractions, events, bars and restaurants to help one settle in and get familiarised with the new surroundings, all specific to each location.

I hope you find this information useful and you do decide to make an international move. I am already thinking about going again – if only I had an accountancy and finance background, I would 100% leave my fate in the hands of the Think Global Recruitment team.

Think Global Recruitment - Improving Lives Annual Survey

"International Experience makes me a Citizen of the World"

Each year, Think Global Recruitment conducts primary research in the form of an overseas survey to analyse the experiences of each accountant that they assist in their overseas move.  This year, over 100 participants took part in the survey and the aim of this report is to present; what is motivating international moves, the best elements of international moves and further interesting comments that participants have shared.

The survey was completed anonymously but participants were asked to state where they moved from and where they moved to.  Countries included; Africa, Americas, Asia, Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Caribbean, Europe, Middle East, New Zealand, the UK and Channel Islands.

Why move overseas?

When asked, "what is the main factor that prompted your desire to work overseas", the vast majority of participants claimed that work experience, followed closely by lifestyle was their biggest reason for the move.

Other reasons that were given included: moving to somewhere more family friendly, experience another culture, close proximity to other countries, learn a new language and improved weather.

Interestingly, only 12.93% were motivated to make the move because of money.

"Besides the work experience, visit beautiful places and increase culture"

The response to the question, "what was the best thing about the move?" indicated that lifestyle (36.54%) and work experience (25.96%) were the two most highly rated aspects of working and living overseas.  A significant drop to 14.42% brings money in as the third most populous answer. Other answers included; "a mix of lifestyle, money, culture and change" and "a better living level".

Living and working overseas gives enhanced access to travel and the opportunity to visit countries that might normally be difficult or out of reach.  One participant said, in reference to the positive aspects of their time overseas, "ability to travel to several European countries'.  Using Europe as an example, flights are reasonably priced and most countries can be visited with a short journey.  For someone who has lived in the USA all of their life, they may not get the opportunity to explore Europe because cost and travel time can make it quite difficult.

"Quicker progression overseas means that when you return, it is a higher level than you would have achieved had you stayed in your original location"

An extraordinary 85.29% of participants agreed that working overseas helps with long-term career development.  Only 1.96% of participants claimed that working overseas may not help long-term career development.

An almost even amount of participants agreed on each of the three following statements:

• International experience is increasingly sought after in management positions (32.43%)
• International experience shows that I am adaptable to change (30.81%)
• International experience makes you a more rounded person (31.89%)

When the participants were asked if they would consider taking another role in their (new) location 75.73% said yes, 4.85% said no, 13.59% said they were unsure and finally 5.83% said other answers such as, "I would love to work in a different location to gain more working experience and experience another culture" and "I am planning to make this my permanent home.".

Following on from these statistics, the participants were asked if they believe that they made the right decision to move to their new location when they did.  A phenomenal result of 87.25% of participants claimed that they did make the right decision to move.  Only, 0.98% said that they did not, 6.86% said they were unsure and 4.9% gave other answers such as; "Could have moved here many years sooner".

Overall, it is clear that the biggest motivating factors for moving overseas are work experience and lifestyle.  This strongly reflects Think Global Recruitment's vision of Improving Lives.  Living and working overseas not only enhances world, cultural and personal experience but it is hugely recognised as a desirable feature when going through a recruitment process.  Working overseas gives massive exposure to different working environments and proves to employers that their candidates are independent and willing to go the extra mile.  It is fantastic to be able to report that so many people believe that they made the right decision in moving overseas.

The day is finally here, all that hard work and the long hours

waiting in anticipation are over. The FAE results have been published! A massive well done to all of those who have passed. You should be incredibly proud of yourselves - we're not accountants but we know it was hard. Once the celebrations are over (have a drink or two for us please) you will probably being thinking 'what next?'...

We have said it many times before and will continue to declare for many years to come - your CA qualification is like a ticket to the rest of the world. You can move virtually anywhere and many accountants do.

Last week we visited Dublin to present and meet with over 50 trainee and recently qualified CAs. It was just phenomenal to be around so many young professionals who are considering an international move. Some of whom, had already gone ahead and got their visas for their chosen destination and some who were open to anything but seeking guidance. It really was a fantastic atmosphere. We

carried out our Worldwide Opportunities presentation which briefly covers nearly every location across the globe (if only there was time to detail each individual place - we'd be old and grey by the time we finish!) and everyone was so enthusiastic to learn.

We told them about the accountants that we have already assisted in their move to the stunning beaches of Bermuda and the opulent countries of the Middle East. We told them about the serene temples and rich culture of Thailand and the thriving business and financial centre in Singapore. Also, Canada - home to spectacular natural scenery and a bustling metropolitan core. And the Czech Republic, known for it's night-life and growing economy. Name a country and I bet we've assisted a CA in moving there. If we haven't... Well, we probably have.

What country takes your fancy? Many accountants that we talk to take on a two year contract so that they can experience another country and culture. This is more than travelling, it's living and working. And not only is it one of the most life changing experiences that you will probably ever have, it is incredible experience to have on your CV. It proves that you are independent and willing to do anything for your career, it makes you stand out from other people interviewing for jobs and on top of all of that, the exposure you will gain is second to none.

Irish CA, Aisling, on Life Down Under in Hobart...

In 2013 Aisling moved from Dublin to Tasmania in Australia, where she now lives in a central apartment in the convivial city of Hobart with her partner. We caught up with her for a quick chat and thought it would be nice to share her story…

 I ended up getting a job in a Big 4 Firm where I have worked for 8 months and been promoted to Assistant Manager, I feel like I’ve taken a big step forward

I never really had a work life balance in Dublin and I had always wanted to move to Australia and travel around the country. I went for a two year contract which has given me so much flexibility – I’ve already seen loads of Australia!

I was trained in a small practice and then went straight into a top 5 firm in Dublin, when I was looking to move overseas I ended up getting a job in a Big 4 firm where I have worked for 8 months and been promoted to Assistant Manager, I feel like taken a big step forward.

All I had to do was pack my bags and that was it!

Think Global Recruitment have a really good reputation in Hobart. All I really had to do was pack my bags and that was it! My consultant was so good at getting back to me, my visa was running late so he was chasing it up and making sure I was kept in the loop. He also put me in touch with an English girl who he assisted in moving to Hobart previously, she was so helpful, she helped me out with loads of stuff.

It was such a big move just for a job.

Obviously moving a few thousand miles away from home was a little bit of a concern! I guess I was worried about settling, it was such a big move just for a job, it was a huge jump so I was really just worrying that it would work out. My partner came with me so we were both hoping that he would be able to get work. We wondered what it would be like; would it be that much different from home?

 

I don’t regret moving, it’s been a massive improvement

My move met my expectations, definitely, I don’t regret moving, it’s been a massive improvement, I didn't know what to expect in my move to be honest, I guess you never do. I’m not really sure; I was just hoping that it would work out. I didn't know so I just hoped. It was quite a rush as well, we both kind of decided we wanted to leave in October, I got offered the job in November and then we moved at the end of January. It was so quick. But it was just too good an offer to turn down.

We call each other the ‘internationals’

 

It’s good in the office because there is a Scottish and English girl and when I first started there were two American girls so there was a good group of people who were in the same boat. We call each other the ‘internationals’. It’s quite easy to settle in when they have the same culture.

We've only been here for eight months but I would say we’re pretty comfortable.

Cultural differences… Everything is quite similar though, sometimes they don’t understand me or know how to say my name but that’s about it!

My partner and I have done so much here, every weekend we do something, we go on day trips or away for the day, the kind of stuff you wouldn't do at home. We’re only 50 minutes away from Melbourne.

They have assisted accountants getting jobs there before so the firm knows that they can be trusted to bring in good candidates. I think this made my application a bit smoother. It was great having someone there to help you out with everything through the process. There is always someone there to hold your hand!

Just do it! You won’t regret it!

If I had to give advice to another accountant it would be to just do it! And I guess, my mum always said to me that you can be home to visit in two days, you’re only a flight away!

Last month Think Global Recruitment launched ‘Global Recruitment Webinars’ allowing the company to invite industry leaders in both recruitment and accountancy to present to professionals on a host of topics.

Presented by Abigail Stevens (Managing Director– Think Global Recruitment), the first webinar discussed ‘Interview Preparation’ and was presented to an enthusiastic audience. Covering the full interview process from phone, video and all the way to face-to-face, Abigail has almost 20 years recruitment experience and has conducted literally thousands of interviews both for internal and external vacancies, covering a whole variety of roles and therefore knows every potential pitfall and is excellently placed to advise professionals seeking advice.

Although a new service line for Think Global Recruitment it is something that the company hugely enjoyed setting up and promoting. Abigail Stevens received great feedback from the participants. They all agreed that they felt far more confident and prepared for any interviews in the pipeline. All attendees that supplied feedback noted that they are more aware of how imperative it is that you tailor each application to the role and company that you are applying for.

Some top tips that were discussed in detail were:

TOP 10 TIPS TO ENSURE A SUCCESSFUL INTERVIEW PROCESS

1. Research - Read up on the company and do your research. Look at web site, financials, media page etc (keen)
2. Key Skill - Know what key skills are required and whether you have them (capable/confidence)
3. Practice - Practice answering difficult questions - Put yourself in the interviewers shoes
4. Salary - Never bring up the topic of salary before the interviewer does.  It is often best to discuss salary at offer stage. Ensure they know its not all about money (keen)
5. Most important - The interview practice is invaluable. It’s better to turn down an offer than be rejected. You may decide mid-interview that you really want the role but interviews feedback shows you have already blown it by that time (first five minutes)
6. Recap - Recap through your experiences.  Know your key achievements
7. Sell Yourself - Be confident in an interview but do not rely on your CV.  Remember to sell yourself.
8. Turn weaknesses into positives
9. Questions - Prepare questions before the interview (keen)
10. Closure - Ask what the next step will be and   indicate that you are keen (keen)

Time for a Run...

Unusually early I am sitting waiting to run my first half marathon of the year. I love this distance, it is a challenge, but does not consume my life leading up to it and not too high a threat of injury if I keep my fitness good inbetween races.

My fun running has taken me all over the globe, one of the reasons I am so pationate about finding positions for people overseas. Seeing what the world has to offer is enlightening.

Living in two continents has helped me run in Australia, New Zealand, England and Scotland on many ocassions. The trickiest run I had was going from snow and minus 15degrees in Scotland to running in plus 38 degrees 48 hours later.

Other hot places I have ran in include Thailand, Cambodia, Borneo, Panang, Hong Kong, Cayman Islands and Malaysia.

Oops better go, got a half marathon to run...

Isn't life easier now it's so mobile...

As you can see, it's been a while.  Like many, I just never seem to find time to post my bloggs.  I have started many, but never finished them.  I have been inspired to write many, but forgot by the time I stepped off that train.  Why it has taken me soo long to download blogger onto my phone is beyond me.   Well here I am now!

What has been new since the last blogg?  So many great things.  Visits to Barcelona, London, Australia and New Zealand to name but a few.

Australia has certainly 'hotted up' and not just because the wet summer is finally having a rest, but in the recruitment sense.  We have had a good number of requests from firms seeking accountants to join their teams.  The roles are spread accross the entire vast country, offering exciting, different places to live for everyone.  From Sydney to Melbourne, Perth to Adelaide to Brisbane and other far spread beautiful locations.  The positions are just as varied including audit, transactions services, recovery/insolvency, financial and management accouting and advisory. How great is that!?

Back in Europe opportunities continue to flurrish, especially, but not exclusively, if you have language skills.  We are delighted to have assisted a large number of accountants to secure roles in Switzerland, Luxembourg, Holland, Belgium, the UK mainland and offshore in the last couple of months.  Seriously there is a world of opportunity out there!

When in Rome...

I am off to one of my favourite European cities today.. Rome. What a lovely city. The buildings, the history, the people, the food, the drink... I can not think of anywhere better to spend the weekend. There is also the weather. As its been getting colder and colder here in the UK, going into minus figures in Scotland, I am looking forward to 18 degrees in lovely Rome.

As you may tell from lack of blog updates, its been a busy few weeks leading up to this break. The international accountancy job market has gone mad. Heaps of new vacancies coming through from all corners of the world. Australia, New Zealand, Far East, Middle East, Bermuda, Caribbean, Europe... you name it we have roles there! Now all we need is to find qualified accountants with the right experience to fit each role.

Post recession companies are still being very choosey regarding the experience, qualifications and personalities they are recruiting. There is certainly competition for the Hot Roles. However, I am told by the accountants we work with that we give the very best interview preparation they have ever received, thus giving them an edge over other applicants. The statistics seem to back this up, showing our applicants are more likely to secure a role than any other. We truly believe time invested in this area pays off. After all, all we want to do is Improve Lives....

This beautiful city I live in...

I have always said that I live in the best city in the UK and one of the best 2 cities to live in the world! To confirm this Edinburgh has won lots of awards. The most recent being The Top Gobal City. It is interesting that some many people considering a move to the UK always think of London first. London is a great city to visit, vibrant with so much history.. but hey that could also be a description of Edinburgh. Edinburgh then has the added bonus of stunning countryside, hills and lochs very nearby.

How right they are!

I believe in living where you want to work and not really letting work dictate where you live. Although I can definately see at some point in a career its worth sacrificing a period of time to live somewhere not perfect to gain the right experience.

This is why I have not got to a point in my life where I will be splitting my living between these two great cities, with the added benefit of being able to visit cities on both sides of the world on route or from the cities I am based in. I can not wait!
